We’ve got seven days of interactive webinars, creative exercises and constructive feedback lined up for you, ready to send you on a novel-writing journey – all in the comfort of your own sofa (or other preferred writing spot)!

During this challenge, we’ll take you through the first steps of the novel-writing process: pinning down your idea, getting to know your main character and their story, and writing an opening that grabs your reader’s interest. Whether you’re new to novel-writing, or a seasoned writer in need of an extra creative boost, by the end of the week you’ll be on a roll, ready to rock the novel-writing journey.

Day 1: Webinar: Developing an idea for your novel.

Day 2: Creative exercises: idea generation and selection.

Day 3: Webinar: Creating a strong lead character and gripping plot.

Day 4: Creative exercises: develop your main character and design your plot.

Day 5: Webinar: Writing an intriguing opening chapter.

Days 6-7: Start writing! Complete your first chapter and receive feedback on your opening.

Challenge details

The challenge kicks off at 10am NZST on Monday 30th March. In the course of the week, you’ll receive:

  • Access to three short, live, information-packed webinars, followed by Q&A sessions
  • Recordings of the webinars to re-watch at your convenience
  • Two sets of creative exercises by email, to complete in your own time
  • Feedback on your opening scene from one of our professional manuscript assessors, when you send it to us before the end of the challenge week
  • Oodles of inspiration and motivation!

This challenge is especially suited to people who are new to writing a novel, but we also welcome experienced writers looking for an extra creative boost.

Send us your opening scene (up to 1,500 words) by midnight on Sunday 5th April to receive feedback

British Standard Time:
Webinars at 10pm Sunday 29th March, Tuesday 31st March and Thursday 2nd April
Send us your opening scene (up to 1,500 words) by 1pm on Sunday 5th April to receive feedback

Eastern Time:
Webinars at 5pm Sunday 29th March, Tuesday 31st March and Thursday 2nd April
Send us your opening scene (up to 1,500 words) by 8am on Sunday 5th April to receive feedback

Pacific Time:
Webinars at 2pm Sunday 29th March, Tuesday 31st March and Thursday 2nd April
